#english_history ## Prelude After James II's son was born, the Parliamentaries asked William of Orange to invade Britian in **1688**, which was hazardous, as William was already at war with France. At this important momen James's determination failed him. ## Process When William entered London, but the crown was offered only to Mary. William then said he'd leave Britain unless he also became king. And he did become king. ## Impact Parliament decided that James II had lost his right to the crown, as he had tried to undermine the "consitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between King and People". This idea was not new, as in the 1680s [[John Locke]] and [[Algernon Sidney]] had aruged that government was based upon the consent of the people. So Parliament's superiority over the king was written into the Bill of Rights in **1689**: the king was now unable to raise taxes or keep an army without the agreement of Parliament, or to act against any MP for what he said or did in Parliament. ^62590f Like the Civil War, the Glorious Revolution was completely unplanned and unprepared for, and was, in fact, more of a coup d'etat rather than a revolution. In **1701** Parliament finally passed the Act of Settlement, to make sure only a Protestant could inherit the crown. ^1c085b
