In Magna Carta, the king promised all "freemen" protection from his officers, and the right to a fair and legal trial. This was an important symbol of political freedom, although mostly only to the prosperous and affluent lords, as well as merchants.
The nobles established a [[Parliament|commitee of twenty-four lords]] to make sure [[Kingship as a family business in the early Middle ages#^6c8634|John]] kept his promises.

## Decay of feudalism

The very own fact that the nobles acted not as vassals and forced the king into submission is a prime example of the beginning decay of feudalism.
Another case in point is that the [[Feudalism after the Norman Conquest#^c25cf9|40 days rule]] was not enough to fight a war for the king, so he started paying soldiers to fight for him.
