#english_history ## America In **1764** there was a serious quarrel over taxation between the British government and its colonies in America. The Americans themselves thought it was not lawful for the British to tax them without their agreement. Political opinion was divided in Britain: some supported these Americans, like [[Politics and Finance of the 18th century|Chatham]] and [[The Hanoverians|Wilkes]], who argued that there should be [[English Parliament#^01a24a|no taxation without representation]]. Then there was the [[American Revolution]]. ## Radicalism Many British politicians openly supported the colonists - "radicals". The most important of them: 1. **Tom Paine** (the first dude ot suggest that the American colonies should become independent) 2. **Edmund Burke** (had a mixture of radical and conservative views, believed that the king was once again too powerful)
