#english_history ## [[Magna Carta Libertatum#^2ed8ac|Decay of Feudalism]] During the 14th century, there was a continuous struggle between the king and his nobles: Edward II was deposed in [[War of England with Scotland and France#^acaa24|1326]]. Richard II, due to his arrogant behaviour and pride, was deposed of in 1399, after he imprisoned his uncle, **John of Gaunt**, when he was busy trying to establish royal authority again in Ireland. He did not have any children. There were 2 possible successors: earl of March, 7 yo grandson of Edward III's second son; Henry of Lancaster, son of John of Gaunt. Henry was stronger and took the crown by force, crowned Henry IV. Although he passed the crown peacefully, he had sown the seeds of a future civil war, in which the nobility would be divided between those who supported his family, the "Lancastrians", and those who supported the family of the earl of March, the "Yorkists".
