#uncat An **empty calorie** is a calorie found in foods and beverages composed primarily or solely of calorie-rich [[Nutrients#^8ec283|macronutrients]] but little or no macronutrients, [[Dietary fibre|fibre]] or [[Proteins|protein]] (they give you energy, but no nutrients) Example: sugar cubes provide practically no calories othen than empty ones. Example: alcohol in beer, wine, etc ## Expenditure As a general rule, infants and adolescents burn more energy per kg than adults do, cause they're continually making large amounts of new tissue. When your thyroid gland secretes excess amounts of hormones (*hyperthyroidism*), you burn food faster, and your REE is higher. When excited your adrenal glands release *adrenaline*, and you burn food faster.
